History of Jodhpur

Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodha, the most famous chief of Rathore clan in 1459. The Rathores came to Pali, near present day Jodhpur after a bloody war with Afghan invaders. The leader, Rathore Siahaji married sister of a local prince which helped them get a foothold in the region. Within a few years, they gained control of Mandore and made it their capital. But by 1459, they felt the need for a bigger and more secure capital which led to the foundation of Jodhpur, the Sun City by Rao Jodha.

Maharaja Umaid Singh helped modify Jodhpur in to a beautiful picturesque city during his rule. Marwari traders from the region have traveled all over the world and prospered every where.
